1st Singapore Team To Race Up Southeast Asia’s Highest Peak In The 20th Mount Kinabalu Interna
Singapore, 29 August 2006 -- 11 Singaporeans and 1 formidable mountain 4,095 meters above sea level. It’s billed as the “toughest mountain race in the world.” For Team Singapore, it will be an uphill battle and a test of spirit, true grit and endurance.
The 20th Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon, organized by the Sabah Tourism Board will see competitors from around the world racing to the summit of Southeast Asia’s highest peak, Mount Kinabalu.
This is the first time Singapore is sending a team to the Climbathon, which attracts participants from places as far flung as Venezuela, Germany, Spain and the UK. Team Singapore was put together by the labour movement’s recreational arm, NTUC Club - Sports and Wellness division. The team has been training for the grueling race as early as February. Made up of 2 women in their 20s and 9 men between 32 and 55 years of age, the runners have been meeting regularly at least twice a week. As they reach the final stages of their training, the focus is now on stairs climbing, where runners go up 40-floor HDB blocks about 15 times per session.
Team Singapore heads up for Sabah on 15 September. The Women’s and Veteran’s challenge will take place on 30 September while the Men’s challenge will be held on 1 October.
The spectacular race takes runners up steep slopes and rocky terrain. Depending on category, runners must complete the 21-kilometer race up and down the mountain within a mere span of a few hours. Men have to complete the route within four and a half hours and women as well as those aged 40 and above get six and a half hours. Trekkers usually take about two days to reach the mountain peak.
“This race is a ground breaking event as it’s the first time, we’re attempting a mountainous-terrain run. Just by sending a team up to compete, we’re showing the world the can-do spirit of Singaporeans. It’s symbolic -- No mountain is going to stop us from achieving greater heights in whatever we do,” said Senior Manager of NTUC Club’s Sports and Wellness, Yusof Lateef.
Inspiring his younger team mates is veteran racer 55-year-old Roland Chung, whose day-job is a Draftsman: “I feel much younger surrounded by the young and energetic team members. I have been participating in many of the Labour Movement’s activities and I hope to support them in many more years to come.”
Another team member, 32-year-old Sales Engineer Timothy Leong is tackling the race as a personal challenge. He’s scaling up Mouth Kinabalu despite having lost some leg muscles in a motorcycle accident 8 years ago.
The team has set itself the target of being among the first 20 international teams to reach the summit.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry and MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, Teo Ser Luck will be Guest-of-Honour at the send off ceremony for “Team Singapore”
