Chinese Classics Appreciation for Children and Senior Citizens
Republic Poly and Woodlands CC to start Chinese Classics Appreciation Programme for children & senior citizens in the North
Singapore, 25 April 2007 -- To promote the reading of Chinese Classics, Republic Polytechnic, together with Woodlands Grassroots Organisations (GROs), will offer Chinese Classics Appreciation classes for children and senior citizens in Woodlands at the new Republic Polytechnic campus and Woodlands Community Club respectively. Mr Eugene Chian, Head of Classics Reading, Chong De Literary Society, will give a public talk on the benefits of reading the Classics such as the Analects by Confucius at the invitation of the organisers. Open to the public, the organisers are expecting at least 200 people to turn up at Republic Poly LT-W2 on 27 April 2007, Friday, at 8pm. The organizers hope that the public talk will also be able to attract volunteers who can lead these classes.
Mr Chian’s talk will focus on how the reading of Chinese Classics has taken the Chinese-speaking communities worldwide by storm and how it has grown in acceptance and popularity in recent years locally. In addition, he will speak on the benefits of reading the Classics, especially for young children. It is widely accepted that besides being an enjoyable activity, reading the Classics can help improve the memory, enhance one’s language skills and build greater self-confidence. A long lasting benefit to note is that the reader will be able to benefit from the wisdom of sages such as Confucius as he or she goes through life’s many challenges. Mr Chian, who has given such public talks in the past, is confident that his audience will share his views. He also hopes to be able to attract volunteers in Woodlands to sign up for the classes offered at Republic Polytechnic and Woodlands Community Club.
In anticipation of strong interest in the children’s Classics Appreciation Class, Republic Polytechnic set up a new Interest Group whose members will offer its first class in May to children in the vicinity. Mr Ang Keng Loo, Senior Director of Student Affairs, said, “Republic Polytechnic works closely with the community to offer programmes that will benefit both the residents and our students. Through the Classics Appreciation programme which we hope will attract both Chinese and non-Chinese children, we hope to see more interaction that will contribute to inter-racial understanding and appreciation of one another’s different cultures and traditions. What is important is that besides learning more about the Chinese language, the children will have fun with our students acting as big brothers and sisters.”
Echoing Mr Ang’s sentiments is Mr Lee Tai Soon, PBM, Chairman Of Woodlands CC Senior Citizen's Executive Committee and Assistant Treasurer of Woodlands Citizens’ Consultative Committee who added, “Our objective is to leverage on Republic Polytechnic’s resources to offer better programmes to senior citizens at the Woodlands Community Club. Reading the Chinese Classics together will no doubt bring them closer to one another, thus enabling them to form new friendships that will enrich life after retirement. We will be the first to offer this programme with Republic Polytechnic and Chong De Literary Society and there are plans to organize overseas trips for our senior citizens to see how other Chinese speaking communities are running the programme. It is our hope that senior citizens from the programme will also help to promote the reading of Chinese classics among the young through family, neighbours and friends. We would also like to extend this programme to senior citizens who are non-Chinese. The Woodlands GROs will work with Indian and Malay Activity groups to do this. In this way, we hope to create a culturally vibrant community who read and enjoy the Classics together.”
