Japanese street performances to add some zing into the humdrum of urban scene here.
Singapore, 23 July 2008 -- Jugglers, physical comedians, acrobats, mimes with daring feats and other off-the-wall performances are set to lift the spirit of Singaporeans leading up to National Day. Beginning 25 July up to 10 August 2008, an all-Japanese street theatre crew will be showcased as part of Variete! Street Theatre, an event presented by SHINE, a youth festival supported by the National Youth Council and the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.
Variete! Street Theatre is the only all-Japanese street performance festival outside of Japan. This year the festival will feature the 11 Japanese performers with 9 acts from Japan’s prestigious street performers programme, “Heaven Artist”, which played to at least 1 million audiences annually. Co-produced by CircusOutreach Ltd. a locally based social enterprise and its Japanese counterpart, Sesame Co. Ltd, a clown theatre company, aims to add another dimension to the street performance scene in Singapore. “It allows people to experience the whole spectrum of street performances beyond the familiar street musicians with their guitars in underpasses and ‘living statues’ seen around town,” said Knik Pang, director of Circus Outreach Ltd., “The performers have to continuously adapt to the dynamics of the interaction between themselves and an impromptu audience. It is all about being spontaneous!”
“Many people are surprised to know that Daidogei, Japanese for street performance, have been an integral part of Japanese street life since the Edo period of the 17th century. We even have international Daidogei competitions in Japan and we are proud to bring the excitement to Singapore”, said RONE, Executive Director of Sesame Co. Ltd.
Launched last year as a two-day event limited to only shopping malls, Variete! Street Theatre 2008 is now a marquee event of this year’s SHINE festival. It has been expanded to include the heartlands, schools and even the Jurong BirdPark. It is set to reach out to at least 2,400 heartlanders as part of Central Singapore Community Development Council signature arts programme, CLAP! or Community Life Arts Program. Regular performances will be held amongst the heartlanders at Kreta Ayer Square, Ang Mo Kio Centre Stage and Toa Payoh HDB Hub. A tour to four secondary schools will be conducted from 28 July to 1 August, will engage and excite at least 5,000 students. Six unique acts will entertain shoppers at Marina Square Shopping Mall as part of their National Day Celebrations from 4 to 10 August. The Daidogei crew will also staged 3 shows at Merlion Park on 9 August as part of the Marina Bay Fringe Celebrations.
"Variete! is a representative of collaborative effort between local and international youth talents that we are striving for in this year's SHINE festival. We want to encourage more of our youths to go beyond Singapore for fresh ideas and collaborations," said Gavin Bryan Lee, SHINE 2008 Youth Panelist. The festival has even garnered the support of Parkroyal Group, an ardent supporter of the arts. Parkroyal on Beach Road has been appointed the Official Hotel of the festival.
Leading up to the unique acts, our very own first time street performance duo, Kit & Kai, will be warming up the streets with their own series of performances. And in the tradition of street performance, there will be a lot of audience interaction and participation. But expect the unexpected. They might just pop up anywhere, especially in crowded areas. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Note To Editors: About Street Theatre
While Singaporeans are already familiar with organised outdoor performances popularized by arts festivals here, street theatre takes a minimalist yet more engaging approach of bringing theatre to the masses. It typically uses the natural setting of the city as its stage with little or no other logistical support expected of a staged outdoor production. The performers typically rely on basic costumes and props and work with a simple enough storyline in order to attract a crowd. Performances usually end up being very interactive in nature that includes juggling, physical comedy, mime and music. Street theatre is arguably the oldest form of theatre still in existence.
