Discoveries of More Gas Fields after Aphrodite

, 24 December 2018 -- Project Aphrodite is the first gas discovery in the Cypriot EEZ and has 129 BCM of natural gas, and so, it is considered to be a cause of a noticeable economic growth for Cyprus.

Tel Aviv (Date): The natural gas field named the Aphrodite is being expected for doing something for Cyprus that some recently discovered major natural gas reservoirs did for Israel, i.e. providing energy independence, decreasing air pollution dramatically, strengthening industries and employment, and creating a considerable flow of cash towards the country’s treasury, among many other benefits.

Project Aphrodite is the first gas discovery in the Cypriot EEZ and has 129 BCM of natural gas, and so, it is considered to be a cause of a noticeable economic growth for Cyprus.

The Aphrodite field is situated 30 km northwest of the Leviathan field of Israel and 160 km south of Limassol in an area where the sea is around 1,700 meters deep. It was found after drilling of the A-1 discovery well which started on 20th September 2011, remained in operation for 116 days and reached 5,860 meters deep below the sea level.

Aphrodite Project is spread in an area of 120 sq. km and the reservoir’s maximum thickness is 320 meters. The expanse of the field and the certainty of its characteristics were enabled in 2013 by the A-2 appraisal well findings.

Plan for Development

Although the plan for the development of the gas field is not yet finalized, the latest plan includes the first phase of five production wells having a high flow rate at an ocean depth of 1,700 meters reaching various depths within the layers of the reservoir at a general depth of around 5,000 meters.

The gas will travel from the reservoir layer towards the wellhead and from the wellhead to the dividing unit which too will be situated on the seabed around 3,000 meters above the reservoir.

From the dividing unit, the gas will be taken through a pipeline towards a floating production facility to be situated within the licensed area for the natural gas conversion, storage, and unloading. The gas will be taken to various destination markets via pipelines from the production facility. The first production phase will have an estimated maximum capacity of around 800 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD).

Exportation

Though the exploration of the gas field took 7 years ago, the development plan for the domestic market has not yet been finalized because of the low level of demand. And therefore the option of exportation is being considered by the government. However, this option is also not viable because the discovered quantity of gas is not large enough to rationalize the huge investment in a pipeline or LNG plant.

Meanwhile, many new discoveries are taking place in the EEZ region of Cyprus which hopefully will help Cyprus to get electricity at cheaper rates and earn cash by exporting gas to other countries.
