Eight teams from six countries qualify for Knock-out Round 2 in first-of-its-kind global contest for
Singapore, 25 June 2008 -- Eight teams from powerhouse institutions around the globe will move on to “knock-out round 2” of The Star Challenge@Fusionopolis, the first-of-its-kind competition to foster the development of the world’s next-generation multimedia search technology that is organised by the Singapore Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
Held as part of the grand opening of Singapore’s science and technology hub, Fusionopolis, on 17 October 2008, the contest offers a prize money of US$100,000 to the winning team with the fastest and most accurate search algorithms that can search audio and video files without text-based tagging.
The teams that will move to “knock-out round 2” of the contest are (in alphabetical order based on country):
COMET from Tsinghua University, China
SHRC from China (includes members from Peking University)
LIG from Laboratoire d'Informatique de Grenoble, France
IAIS-NetMedia from Fraunhofer Institute of Germany
NII-KAORI from National Institute of Informatics , Japan
adMIRer from National University of Singapore
LMS CTS from National University of Singapore
UIUC-YX from University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC)
The eight teams survived the first round that began on 15 June, and which required them to test their search algorithms on 20 hours of audio content for specific spoken phrases and keywords.
“The submissions from the eight teams were of a high standard, turning in search returns that were very accurate,” says Professor Chong Tow Chong, Executive Director of A*STAR Science and Engineering Council. “Competition in round 2 will be very keen given the standing of the teams.”
“Knock-out round 2” of The Star Challenge@Fusionopolis will begin on 15 July 2008, when the eight teams will be tasked to search 30 hours of video content for specific images or video clips. The task will be challenging, as the search will need to happen based on an actual video image or clip, without any specific text description.
More than 56 teams from 17 countries signed up to take part in this niche competition when it was launched in January. The grand finals of The Star Challenge@Fusionopolis will take place on 23 October 2008 at Fusionopolis, Singapore.
