Fastweb: steady as she goes
Michael Philpott
London, 17 July 2006 -- Fastweb announced its Q2 2006 preliminary results yesterday. Subscriber growth was steady, up by another 80,000 customers as per the last quarter. Revenues also grew by the same amount (€289m) indicating that customer ARPU is at least steady. EBITDA has slightly increased to €93m over the quarter, compared to €90m last quarter.
Comment: The big news for Fastweb in 2005 was that it had completed its network expansion program. This allowed the company to focus its efforts on customer growth and profitability, and certainly EBITDA is now steadily heading in the right direction as a consequence.
Customer growth has been steady over the first six months of 2006, but then so has the Italian broadband market in general. Fastweb has been a true 'triple-play' ISP from day one, and is known around the world as being one of the most innovative and successful IPTV players to date, and yet like all other broadband ISPs, it is now struggling to grow its ARPU. It will be interesting to see what Fastweb's strategy will be to try and remedy this particular issue.
So growth for Fastweb is steady, reflecting the general Italian broadband market, and this is likely to be the story for H2 of the year, with the company hoping for an annual increase in revenues of 30%. The decrease in spend will mean a slightly higher increase in EBITDA, and the company predicts a free cashflow generation by the end of the year.
