First Time Ever Zero Fares From Malaysia Airlines To Asean Destinations
Malaysia, Singapore, 14 May 2008 -- For the first time in its 60-year history, Malaysia Airlines today announced that it is launching Everyday Low Fares (ELF) campaign from all its ASEAN destinations and selected routes between Malaysia and China. One (1) million seats will be offered to customers and this is expected to boost air travel within the region.
Bookings are open from 21 May until 3 June 2008 for travel between 1 July 2008 and 14 December 2008. To enjoy these low fares, travellers must make their flight reservations at http://www.malaysiaairlines.com.
ELF was first launched by Malaysia Airlines on 5 May 2008 with 1 million zero-fares for all its domestic routes within Malaysia. The response to-date has been overwhelming, with over 150,000 seats sold, an upsurge of 900% online penetration.
Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr Idris Jala said, “We recently declared that Malaysian Airlines is transforming into the World’s Five Star Value Carrier (FSVC) and we promised that customers will be able to enjoy 5-Star Services at low prices.”
“We have successfully maintained our excellent products and services, and significantly reduced our costs by over Ringgit Malaysia 1.3 billion (US$406 million) in the last 2 years. At the same time, we have improved our pricing and inventory systems, and returned the company to profitability. We are now delighted to launch Everyday Low Fares for travel within the ASEAN region, by offering fares starting from RM0 (Zero Malaysian Ringgit) for journeys starting from Malaysia. Similar Zero fares will be available for journeys from all our online stations in the ASEAN countries.”
Customers need to observe only three simple steps to enjoy Everyday Low Fares. They book online through http://www.malaysiaairlines.com, purchase tickets early at least 30 days before flight departure and they need to remember that flight dates cannot be changed nor can be refunded. All fares exclude airport tax and surcharges.
Customers will experience Malaysia Airlines’ 5-Star services including refreshment on board, convenient schedules, on time departures, 20kg free baggage allowance, assigned seats and many other benefits.
“This is a win-win situation for all; our customers enjoy low fares and 5-Star services while we fill up our planes. We are not losing any revenue from this as the seats represent 30% of surplus seats which would otherwise be unsold.
This also provides us with the ability to recover some of the fuel costs which would otherwise be lost as the seats are perishable,” Mr Jala said.
To prevent dilution, Everyday Low Fares are only offered on lean flights and stringent terms and conditions have been put in place.
“We are the first full service airline to do this in a big way. If we are successful, we will redefine the rules in the travel industry,” he added.
Whilst Terms and conditions are restricted and apply for Everyday Low Fares, mixed fares are allowed. For example, if zero fare is only available on one leg of the journey, and there is no zero fare on the return leg, a customer can still purchase mixed fares comprising a combination of zero fare and regular fare.
