LEARNING WITH NATURE: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AT ITS BEST

Gurgaon, India, 16 March 2017 -- With fast-paced and stressful study life, students have got no time for learning with nature. We elders have some of the best moments of our lives filled with the memories of nature and they happen to be the liveliest and happiest memories. When asked to elaborate our experience, we refer to our time spent outdoors with nature and friends. The major reason for kids not spending time outside comes out to be, the TV or computer screens which keep them busy. It steals all the chances of relaxation and peace of mind while spending time with nature does the exact thing.
Nature is enticing and thriving
• The young generation today, needs an education that takes learning and understanding hand in hand. It is important for the students to gain knowledge that imbibes in them, sense of belongingness with other beings and curiosity about life.
• When given a chance to interact with nature, students find it interesting, representing and meaningful. This introduces the academic subject to the environment and builds healthier relationships between the students, teachers and the natural world.
• When introduced with nature as a part of experiential learning it builds empathy as a hallmark of humanity.
• Sensing nature, beautifully portray a good piece of art and writing also helps the students to "be" in the moment. If students are asked to describe a garden, their imagination reaches the roughness of the tree bark, the smell of rain-soaked soil and beautiful flowers or the rhythm of wind through the branches.
• This improves the sensory focus of students, the art of describing a piece of creative writing and a bonus of extra marks in assignments.
Children thrive outdoors because a sense of balance is developed by moving and exploring through the world around. As it has always been said, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy.
We belong to a time where everyone is largely disconnected to the world. It won't be surprising if we say that 15-year old kids do not know that books are made from trees and the fuel in their school bus came from the earth long before when it comes from petrol pumps.
Outdoor Training
• There are numerous activities that are simple, effective, and accessible which can easily be conducted at school level.
• Try a hunting game in the garden area and ask students to find 5 things related to nature. You can also choose to prepare a list of things you want them to find and that might include things like finding the bark of a tree, the petals of a flower, feathers, fallen leaves and other related things.
• This can be interesting and a full of knowledgeable facts. The students might come up with various other things that are connected with nature.
• Once the students have gathered all items from the garden, one-by-one call the students and whatever they pick, allow them to describe it. They might come up with some interesting descriptions.
When the students are engaged in active learning with nature, we assume that they would have enough to say about their experiential learning with nature.
Outdoor activities brush up the creative and imaginative skills of students and also turn learning into an interesting engagement for them. At Presidium, teachers ensure that students are engaged in such interesting, creative and fun learning activities. This makes an obvious reason to call Presidium as one of best schools in Gurgaon. From years, they have been fostering excellence in education.
