Lenovo and Spatial Technology Work Together to Promote Digital Construction Innovation

Lenovo sponsors Digital Construction InnoTech Center with ThinkStation P-series workstations to drive building information model (BIM) technology applications

Hong Kong, 10 June 2019 -- Lenovo, the world's leading manufacturer of personal computer and smart devices, is committed to innovative thinking and to driving the development of innovative technologies to promote convergence in the creative industry. The company hopes to maintain close cooperation with the industry to nurture talent, further the creation of a smart ecosystem and build the smart city blueprint. Leveraging its ability to bring innovative technology to life, Lenovo has joined hands with Spatial Technology to launch the Digital Construction InnoTech Center. The Center will be equipped with Lenovo’s high-performance ThinkStation P series and ThinkPad P series workstations and Spatial Technology's innovative digital construction technologies. It will train construction industry talents on Building Information Model (BIM) technology in order to drive the development of BIM applications. The collaboration will help drive the widespread use of BIM in the construction industry and train the industry workforce.

As BIM technology matures, many construction projects in Hong Kong have adopted it, but there is still room for improvement in its application in civil engineering projects. Currently, civil engineering projects in Hong Kong, from planning and design to construction, still rely on drawings as the basis for design and implementation by contractors and sub-contractors. That the digital systems of different companies cannot interoperate has reduced efficiency and the quality of works. BIM technology can assist the industry by creating a computer simulation of the entire building process, including project planning, design, construction and facility management through one digital model. The use of BIM technology can effectively improve the quality of engineering design works, shorten construction time, reduce manpower and save costs.

In view of this, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has set up a HK$1 billion Construction Innovation and Technology Fund (CITF) to subsidize the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry in adopting the latest BIM technology to enhance productivity and the quality of construction works. The government also issued a circular stating that government capital projects with a value of more than HK$30 million must adopt BIM technology from design to construction. BIM technology brings opportunities and challenges to the local construction industry. To assist the industry to undergo digital transformation, Lenovo and Spatial Technology have jointly established the Digital Construction InnoTech Center for the AEC industry with the goal of providing quality BIM training and consultancy services using advanced workstations, and also to introduce innovative technology to the construction industry.

Digitalization is a trend for the construction industry. Recently, Spatial Technology has established several partnerships with large construction companies in Hong Kong. It is hoping to deploy and apply BIM technology to increase efficiency and productivity, thus optimizing the utilization of construction assets. To fulfill demand for talent and consultation services in the industry, the Digital Construction InnoTech Center has been set up to offer comprehensive and practical BIM training and consultation. With an area of 1500 sq. ft., the Center is located on Wing Hong Street in Lai Chi Kok. It can deliver trainings and generate approximately 2,500-3,000 visits per year. The trainings will be conducted by professional AEC practitioners with specialist experience and make full use of case studies. This method helps trainees master technical knowledge and skills in a short time.

Due to the complexity of BIM solutions, practitioners must use professional workstations to ensure the smooth and reliable operation of the software. Meeting these requirements, Lenovo has deployed Lenovo ThinkStation P Series and ThinkPad P Series workstations at the InnoTech Center. To meet the high computing standards of the AEC industry, Lenovo ThinkStation P series and ThinkPad P series workstations are equipped with top-end Intel® Xeon® CPU, NVIDIA® Quadro® VGA and GPU memory cards. With ISV certification, the Lenovo workstations provide the ideal performance for the BIM software.

“I am delighted to work with Spatial Technology to deploy the ThinkStation P Series products at the Digital Construction InnoTech Center, providing high-quality BIM training to drive the adoption of digital construction technologies in the AEC industry,” said Ronald Wong, General Manager of Hong Kong and Macau, Lenovo. “A lot of construction-related industries are undergoing digital transformation and strong computing power is crucial to allow the application of the latest digital technology. Lenovo is committed to constantly elevating the design and R&D of its quality products. As a trusted industry partner, Lenovo helps the AEC industry develop and grow.”

"The establishment of the Digital Construction InnoTech Center relies on the cooperation and support of the AEC industry. We would like to show our gratitude to Lenovo for its support and joining to launch the InnoTech Center. Looking ahead, the Digital Construction InnoTech Center will provide BIM training to the industry and carry out projects that call for the innovative application of BIM technology to drive the development of digital construction technology," said Andy Cheung, CEO of Spatial Technology.
