LIVESTRONG(R) Global Cancer Campaign Announces New Commitments to Cancer Control From Around the Wor

LIVESTRONG Receives International Commitments From Every Continent Representing Nearly 50 Countries

AUSTIN, TX -- (MARKET WIRE), 12 June 2009 -- Today the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) announced it has received commitments from every continent representing nearly 50 countries as part of the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign. A map featuring all the commitments to date can be viewed at http://www.livestrong.org. Advocates whose commitments were approved through a rigorous application process will begin receiving their invitations to the Summit in the coming days and weeks. Among those receiving invitations are: FUCA - Fundacion Cancer (Buenos Aires, Argentina); Pallium India (Kerala, India); Dutch Cancer Society (Amsterdam, The Netherlands); BreastSens (Gauteng, South Africa) and Nurses Network Against Tobacco and Substance Abuse of Thailand (Bangkok, Thailand).

"These commitments speak to the diverse need and interest in addressing the global cancer burden on topics including tobacco control, quality and access to care, breast health, clinical trials and palliative care," said Doug Ulman, LAF President and CEO. "All are critical to avoid a looming public health catastrophe."

In September 2008, Lance Armstrong, LAF founder and chairman, cancer survivor and champion cyclist, announced the Foundation's commitment to making cancer a global priority at the Clinton Global InitiativeAnnual Meeting in New York. The LAF made this commitment after itsworldwide research, conducted over 18 months, revealed widespreadmisconceptions, stigma and lack of awareness associated with cancer.

In response, the LAF established the LIVESTRONG(TM) Global Cancer Campaign to urgently address the burden of cancer worldwide and support the 28 million people living with cancer around the globe. Cancer kills more people every year than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined. It is estimated that cancer will be the leading cause of death worldwide by 2010.

With such staggering statistics, the LAF recognized that a global challenge like cancer required a global movement. And so it began urging world leaders, leading cancer organizations and cancer survivors to join together by making commitments to take action in their communities to reduce the burden of cancer.

Molebatsi Pooe-Shongwe, Founder of BreastSens in South Africa, wrote candidly in her commitment application, "Stigma: This is the main challenge in my work. Patients fear that their communities will mistake chemotherapy side effects for HIV/AIDS symptoms exposing them to moral judgments, vicious anti-AIDS views and persecution. A young woman refused treatment -- mastectomy and chemotherapy for these reasons. She raised concern that breast loss will severely hinder her marriage prospects. She, by default, chose to die than face the ferociousness of stigma."

M. R. Rajagopal, Founder of Pallium India, wrote the goal of his commitment is to "promote development of palliative care services in cancer institutions in regions in India which have no palliative care now, addressing palliative care policy, education and drug availability, aiming for a trickle-down effect through oncologists-in-training, so that cancer professionals of tomorrow incorporate supportive and palliative care in their routine practice."

Outstanding commitments such as these will be highlighted at the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit, the Campaign's landmark event, in Dublin, Ireland, Aug. 24-26, 2009. The Summit will make the case for urgent action to address the global cancer burden and introduce new commitments for cancer control by bringing together key stakeholders from all parts of the world in an unprecedented show of solidarity. The Summit will also serve as a forum to build a global grassroots advocacy movement to spur global action in the fight against cancer.

The LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign is proud of its successes to date in Australia, California, Mexico and, most recently, Italy, where its corporate partner Nike helped build grassroots awareness ofthe burden of cancer through visibility efforts including its Open Roads project, in which Hope Rides Again yellow boxes of chalk and cheer cards were given to fans who lined the tour route in support of Lance Armstrong, LAF founder and chairman, cancer survivor and champion cyclist. The LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Campaign will head to the Tour de France (July 4-26), the Tour of Ireland (Aug. 19-23) and the LIVESTRONG Global Cancer Summit in Ireland (Aug. 24-26), as well as other locations to be announced.
