Maintaining a cast stone fountain

When you buy a cast stone fountain, understand that fact that it is a very durable item. Being made of stone, nothing will happen to it naturally. It can sit in your garden for eons without even a scratch on its surface. A cast stone does not have air pockets like a natural stone. So, water cannot seep inside and expand and split the stone. However, a fountain made of cast stone, a large fountain or a small fountain, has to be maintained in order to ensure that it looks nice and not like a decrepit and unwanted structure.

, 5 May 2010 -- A large fountain can be difficult to maintain if you don’t have the patience and the knowhow. Among large fountains, a cast stone fountain must be well maintained to make it look the best.

When you have a cast stone fountain, you must regularly check for natural debris like leaves, dust and dirt. If you have a large fountain in your garden that is located close to trees, there is a high likelihood of leaves accumulating in it. Leaves, dirt and dust can even clog the pump and as a result, damage the motor. Regular maintenance would involve regular checking out and then cleaning at regular intervals.

Another important part of the maintenance process involves checking the water level in the fountain. When you have an outdoor large fountain, the water will gradually evaporate and the level will go down. When you look at a modern cast stone fountain, you will find that many of the models will have an automatic water supply. If your fountain has an automatic water supply, then you need not bother about the water level. However, if the water needs to be filled manually, then this is a must exercise. Low water level will damage the motor and you cannot afford to have this eventuality.

The cast stone in a cast stone fountain also needs to be protected from acid rain and pollution. If the cast stone looks completely worn out, its beauty will take a severe beating. We are sure you wouldn’t like to invite guests to an outdoor party where the fountain looks worn out and out of place. For maintenance of the cast stone, you can use a sealant as a protective cover. Otherwise, you can also wait for a few years so that cast stone can age a bit and then apply the sealant. In the latter process, you not only protect the stone but also allow it to look aged. The antique look would sure look appealing. If you have a large fountain, then this could be a cumbersome process and would require time and patience.

At the end of the winter season, when the snow melts, water can seep inside the bowls that are there in a cast stone fountain. The bowls must be turned upside down so that no water seeps through. The water may solidify and expand and cause irreparable damage to the fountain. Again, with a large fountain, this is a time consuming job but worth its weight in gold.

A large fountain, especially a cast stone fountain has to be cared for well to make sure it looks at its best. If you have a large fountain that is a cast stone fountain, maintaining it will only enhance its beauty. You will feel proud as an owner and brag about it to everyone.
