Murdoch University launches a new Bachelor of Environmental Management degree in Singapore

Landmark degree in Management and Environmental Management
believed to be the first of its kind in Singapore

Singapore, 1 March 2008 -- Murdoch University through its International Study Centre in Singapore today launched a new and innovative double degree in Management and Environmental Management, in what is believed to be the first of its kind in Singapore.

The course prepares students to become fully trained Environmental Managers who will receive a strong grounding in science-based theories of the total environment and are able to translate them into practical management decisions and solutions.

Murdoch University's Deputy Vice Chancellor (Faculty, Enterprise & International) Professor Gary Martin explains, “Graduates will play a part in finding solutions to the environmental problems that are currently facing us, not only in Singapore but on a global front.”

"By linking management to local, regional and global sustainability, graduates will be equipped to develop clear management alternatives for a viable future. With increasing pressure on all aspects of industry and development to factor environmental costs into their bottom line - the role of Environmental Managers will continue to rise," Professor Martin added.

Multiple job opportunities for Environmental Managers

Graduates who pursue work as Environmental Managers will find there is high demand for their skills by planning, engineering, environmental, and architectural firms through to land developers, power and water utilities, waste management and pollution control companies.

Management graduates are also highly sought after across the globe, with employment opportunities in general management; convention services; administrative services; public relations; sales; engineering; natural science management; management consultancy; and training and development.

Environmental management critical for Singapore Green Plan 2012

In 2006, the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources updated the Singapore Green Plan 2012 – Singapore's 10-year blueprint towards environmental sustainability. Eight months of extensive consultation brought out key environmental issues like Climate Change and resulted in a robust plan able to address emerging environmental challenges. Graduates of the Murdoch University’s Environmental Management double degree programme are expected to turn the Green Plan into reality.

Chief Executive Officer of the Murdoch University International Study Centre, Mr James Wong says, “Building sustainable communities is highly complex and depends on the efforts of a wide range of professional occupations, including architecture and urban planning, civil engineering, community development, and increasingly environmental management. This programme will plug the labour shortages and skills gaps in industry by developing talents who will be professionally trained to tackle these multi-faceted issues.”

The first intake in this course will commence in second trimester 2008. For enrolment advice, contact:
