New Published Study Proves HipSaver Soft Hip Protectors Significantly Reduce Hip Fractures, Setting
CANTON, MA -- (MARKET WIRE), 5 June 2008 -- A major study published this week in the "Journal Of the American Medical Directors Association" adds further proof that HipSaver brand all-soft hip protectors can be highly effective in preventing fall-related hip fractures in the elderly. The all-soft HipSaver protectors reduced hip fractures by over 80% in this study.
The 1.5-year study of over 200 patients was conducted at the Shoham Geriatric Medical Center in Israel by Medical Director Doron Garfinkle, M.D. Patients in the control group not wearing HipSaver suffered 14 hip fractures, while those wearing HipSaver had only 2 hip fractures. In two prior studies published in the "Journal of the American Medical Directors Association" and in "Advance for Physical Therapists," patients wearing HipSaver protectors experienced 0% hip fractures.
"We all know how devastating hip fractures can be for an elderly person's well-being and survival," notes Ed Goodwin, president of HipSaver, Inc. "Because of some negative findings about hard-plastic hip protectors, some in the medical community have unfairly dismissed our soft protectors as well. We designed HipSavers using biomechanical principles, and now three studies show the validity of our approach and its potential for improving health, quality of life and longevity among the elderly."
Each year over 350,000 hip fractures occur in the United States, and university studies show that about 90% occur as a result of the severe impact of a fall. HipSaver protectors, which consist of underwear that places a soft, energy-reducing pad over the hipbone, are used around the world in veterans' hospitals, nursing homes, hospitals and elder communities.
