Republic Polytechnic Raises Bar In Greenery Effort

3 millions reductions in the use of plastic bags is aimed in a project that
compliments the “Bring Your Own Bag Day”

Singapore, 6 June 2007 -- 6 June 2007 – 280 students from Republic Polytechnic (RP) will be playing their part with its ‘Project Minus3Million Plastic Bags’ aimed at educating and increasing awareness of the ‘Bring Your Own Bag Day’ (BYOBD), an initiative by the National Environment Agency (NEA), Singapore Environment Council and major supermarkets and retailers. The initiative was introduced in April 2007 and makes every 1st Wednesday of the month a BYOBD in Singapore.

‘Project Minus3Million Plastic Bags’ is RP’s own version and an extension from the BYOBD. The students from various schools of the polytechnic will embark on a series of public outreach programmes that involve them giving out 10,000 RP reusable bags to the public in a bid to encourage them on the use of reusable bag for shopping trips.

In addition, the students will be promoting ‘Project Minus3Million Plastic Bags’ campaign to encourage shoppers to make a pledge on reducing the number of plastic bags used. To reinforce the campaign, a pocket-sized information card (in English and Chinese) will be distributed to the campus community and members of the public.

Commenting on the green move, Dr Terence Chong, Director of School of Applied Science, Republic Polytechnic says, “This is an initiative that reflects Republic Polytechnic’s mission and philosophy towards environmental friendliness. With this event, we are able to showcase that Republic Polytechnic’s students would actively reach out beyond the school grounds to show that they care about their environment. It is part of the active citizenry values that we are promoting among the young.”

RP is encouraging six lesser plastic bags used per week for each person. Through giving out the 10,000 bags, it aims to reduce the number of plastic bags used to 3 millions per year, based on these calculations:

• 1 reusable bag = 3 plastic bags
• 1 week, 2 shopping trips = reduce 6 plastic bags
• 52 weeks X 6 plastic bags = 312 per shopper
• 10000 reusable bags X 312= 3120000

Before receiving the bags, students will encourage the shoppers to switch to using reusable bags instead of using plastic bags when doing their weekly shopping. Shoppers are encouraged to make a pledge on the number of plastic bags they will not use on a weekly basis. Surveys will be conducted by students to record the number of plastic bags pledged by shoppers. Shoppers will then be given a pocket-sized card to remind them to reduce the number of bags used weekly.

The students will be distributing 4,500 reusable bags to 3 supermarket outlets within the Woodlands vicinity on Wednesday, 6 June 2007 from 2pm to 5.30pm. The outlets are:

• Sheng Siong (Woodlands) – 6A Woodlands Centre Rd #01-280, S(731006).
• PRIME Supermarket (Woodlands) – Blk 678 Woodlands Ave 6 #01-716, S(730678).
• Sheng Siong (Woodlands) – Blk 301 Woodlands St 31 #01-217, S(730301).
