Sand-sational March on Palawan Beach
Free Sand Sculpting Workshops
Award-winning Singaporean sand sculptor, JOOheng Tan
displays life-size creations
Singapore, 5 March 2010 -- SINGAPORE, 5 March 2010 – Sentosa will offer a ‘sand-sational’ experience during the upcoming March school holidays with “Sandy Treasures”, a sand sculpting event for all ages. Families can learn to create their very own sand sculptures through free workshops conducted by professional sand sculptors, and enjoy a fun-filled family day-out at Sentosa’s Palawan Beach. The workshops will be held over nine days starting Saturday, 13 March 2010.
It is also collaborating with internationally-acclaimed and Singapore-born sand sculptor, JOOheng Tan who will create four intricately carved, life-size sand sculptures that will certainly be a visual feast.
“Sandy Treasures will take place on Palawan Beach, a vibrant and fun destination for families. We want to give kids and their parents a hands-on experience that cannot be recreated by reading textbooks,” said Sentosa Leisure Group’s Programming Manager, Regina Chia. “We are proud to collaborate with JOOheng, Singapore’s poster boy for sand sculpting. Sandy Treasures presents a wonderful opportunity for our guests to see a range of JOOheng’s works and I think people can easily identify with the deep emotion he expresses in his works of art.”
For sand sculptor JOOheng, Sandy Treasures marks a homecoming as his career started on Sentosa in 1999 where he was talent-spotted at the Sentosa Sandsation event, Asia’s first international sand sculpting competition which featured master sculptors from around the world. He is now regarded as one of the world’s top ten sand sculptors, and his works have often been described as powerful, dynamic, and with strong themes.
“It is heartwarming and surreal for me to come back to the place where I started my career, and I am looking forward to sharing some of my favourite works which I have created over the years with the public,” said JOOheng. “Sand sculpting, like painting or photography, is an expression of an artist’s ideas, memories and feelings. Through these sand sculptures, I hope to excite and create awareness of sand sculpting as an art form in Singapore, and to encourage more people to pick it up as a hobby.”
Sentosa is proud to showcase an anthology of sand sculptures by JOOheng titled “Shifting Sand”, which showcases the best of his works in architecture and sand typography. The collection includes four sand sculptures and an exhibition of photos of JOOheng’s award-winning works that he has created around the world. The photo exhibition is the first time a sand sculptor is showing all his past works in a single exhibition. These works will also be on display for the first time in Singapore.
About JOOheng’s Sand Sculptures
Shifting Sand
The title piece, and the largest of the four sculptures, measures three metres by five metres wide, and is a new design created especially for this event. This sculpture, which portrays JOOheng’s career that has taken him across oceans and continents over the last eleven years, features a self-statue of himself seated atop a camel and overlooking a cluster of miniature sand architectural icons from around the world.
Roar of the Lion
The first of JOOheng’s international-winning pieces, ‘Roar of the Lion’, is a half-lion, half mer-man sculpture, that was created in the Netherlands in 2000 and inspired by Singapore’s national icon, the Merlion.
Surfing into a Dream
This sculpture is another award-winning self-portrait which JOOheng created in Spain in 2003. The sculpture tells of him living his dream as a sand sculptor and riding the ever-changing crests and troughs (waves) of his career.
Dream Knot
JOOheng’s favourite piece of work, ‘Dream Knot’ depicts the rare possibility of two people sharing the same dream. The sculpture shows two minds connected by a beautiful female, who represents the shared dream. It was created in South Korea in 2009.
This home-coming journey for JOOheng will also be celebrated with the launch of a coffee-table book, also titled “Shifting Sand”. The book showcases JOOheng’s sand sculpture creations from around the world.
Those keen on following in JOOheng’s footsteps or who want to pick up the basic skills to create a sand sculpture can participate in the free “Sandy Good Times” workshops, where they will work in teams to create sculptures limited only by their imagination.
