The Australian state is in best position to know skill migrant numbers: Morrison

India, 26 November 2018 -- Prime Minister Scott Morrison wants states and territories to plan where migrants go they can be funnelled into growth areas. Australia’s national migration program potential changes consist of state making a plan of where the new migrants must be settled to balance the population levels of the regions. This update has come again and again that Prime Minister can ask the potential migrants to live and work for at least five years in a regional area of Australia to be able to receive permanent residency.

The state has right to say where they require population as they plan roads, hospitals and schools.

The Prime Minister told Sky News that, “This is a blinding piece of common sense, which is: how about states who plan for population growth and the Commonwealth government, who sets the migration levels, actually bring this together?"

The federal government sets an annual cap for skilled and family migration that is fixed at 190,000 with skilled migrants distributed through a range of visa streams. The overall cap will only be set-up by the federal government. Though, the state can come and give an idea about the number of intakes they want for permanent migration.

The government for states would require demonstrating the sufficient infrastructure to handle the resulting population growth. The migrants shifting to regional areas are done for non-permanent visas.

The Minister added,” if you want permanent residency in this country and you're on a non-permanent visa, and you haven't been compliant with the terms of your non-permanent residency visa and you go home."

Though, the office of immigration minister David Coleman refused to comment on the story claiming that ministers will not discuss matters that may or may not be the subject of cabinet discussions.

The deputy secretary in the Immigration department, Abul Rizvi, said greater cooperation between the Commonwealth and the states in an excellent idea. Though, he also pointed out that skilled visa categories are already distributed for each state and territory.

If the government is facing problems with adequate infrastructure, the focus should be on total migration and not just limited to permanent stream.
The population strain is more caused by temporary workers and international students.

Australian Migration level has been stood to its lowest level in a decade under the Turnbull Government. Though the immigration cap was fixed at 190,000 still the total numbers of migrants were 163,000 under the leadership of Turnbull government. The decline is the result of a rigorous selection of family and skilled visa applicants.

The 20,000 drops from 2026/187 immigration level constituted 12,000 drop in skilled visa grants and 8,000 family visas.
The fall in skill migration levels was quoted as a crisis by the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry specifically for skilled migrants.

The new government is planning to work on changes in how to direct more skilled migrants to regional Australia.
