The Kallang Wave roars into Cathay's The Picturehouse
Only local production featured in Happy 1st Anniversary.
Singapore, 28 February 2007 -- Orbital is pleased to announce that its inaugural documentary-film, ‘THE KALLANG WAVE’, will premiere at The Picturehouse on 25th March.
‘THE KALLANG WAVE’ is the story of Singapore told through the dreams and struggles of the nation’s past and present footballers, and offers insight from the fans and working team supporting them. Glory, frustration, and a mounting sense of despair colour an impassioned debate about the heart of sport and the realities of economic prosperity.
Co-director Yanfeng Lee said, “When news of plans to tear down the National Stadium in 2007 was announced four years ago, the Orbital team looked into the possibility of documenting the story of the stadium. “However, our research into the legacy and history of the stadium unravelled a far more passionate, timely and compelling story – the challenges faced by local football leagues and the national team.“
“We are honoured to premiere our film at The Picturehouse, a venue that is equally rich in history and heritage as our National Stadium,” added co-director Hanafi Ramdan.
The film is the only local production to be screened theatrically alongside a selective collection of five foreign films as part of the arthouse cinema’s ‘Happy 1st Anniversary’ celebrations from 23rd to 28th March.
From interviews and match footage to history and coverage of milestone events, ‘THE KALLANG WAVE’ lends a voice to the people behind the scenes and highlights the unsung heroes of Singapore’s football history. The film questions
whether the hard work, values and achievements of local players have been disregarded by the new generation of Singaporeans.
The film was produced with main sponsorship from S’pore Discovery Centre (SDC). Says COL(NS) Jordan Woo, General Manger of SDC, “Sports, especially football, is an excellent way of bringing people together. When they cheer for the same team, regardless of race, religion or income level, a strong bond is built.” He adds, “We support local productions. By giving our support, we pave another path for local talents to showcase their works.”
‘THE KALLANG WAVE’ is a film about passion, pride, identity, priorities, and a society coming to grips with its place in a cold and unfamiliar new world.
