6- 26 August 2007 at The Esplanade Theatre Singapore, 5 February 2007 -- Citystate Arts & Events Management Pte Ltd announced today that it will be bringing the renowned, award-winning Broadway musical, “The King and I” , to Singapore for the very first time. In addition, the musical will also cast ten local children as little princes and princesses. Auditions will be held in conjunction with Kids’ Central and the Julia Gabriel Centre in May and June at the Forum Shopping Mall. Set in the 1860’s in Bangkok, the exotic capital city of Siam, this East meets West intriguing story about a Thai king and a British governess is one of the most memorable and longest running revival of a Rodgers and Hammerstein’s production on Broadway. Based on the real life adventures of the English widow, Anna Leonowens, and the best-selling novel, “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon, “The King and I” is a fascinating tale about a clash of customs. “We are absolutely thrilled to be bringing this well-loved musical to Singapore for the first time,” says Mr Leow Siak Fah, Chairman, Citystate Arts & Events Management Pte Ltd. “We believe that a local touch is added to this internationally renowned musical by casting local children as the little princes and princesses so that Singaporeans can better relate to the musical.” The Tony-award winning musical - featuring ornate sets and costumes and a dazzling score by Rodgers and Hammerstein featuring memorable songs such as “Hello Young Lovers”, “I Whistle a Happy Tune”, “Shall We Dance?” and “Getting to Know You” – promises to thrill audiences young and old. Presented by the United Overseas Bank (UOB), “The King and I” will be showing at the Esplanade theatres from 6 to 26 August 2007.
